Amanda Palmer

Performer, writer, pianist Co-founder of the punk cabaret duo The Dresden Dolls, currently working with The Grand Theft Orchestra for her new album “Theatre Is Evil”!! Amanda is was born in New York City and has been a street theatre performing since high school. She is known for her trusting and daring personality with her life a music. She is known to be a couch surfer (Sleeping at fan’s places during touring) and is a crowd surfer. I believe we will be hearing her music on the radio in the future. The lyrics are often deep and always sung with passion. The instrumental sounds are unique and her video are that, as well as entertaining. Her music is original and for the right ear, appreciated.

Amanda Palmer – In My Mind – The Art of Asking

Amanda Palmer says don’t make people pay for music. Let them. In a passionate talk that begins in her days as a street performer (droping a dollar in the hat for the Eight-Foot Bride!), she expresses the new relationship between artist and fan.

The Blow- True Affection (2009)

It’s Monday so that means it’s a new song that you might of missed. This week’s track comes from performance artist, Khalea Maricich, who performs under the name, The Blow. She’s an artist out of Portland that is not just tied to music she also performs monologues at shows and has showcased drawings and light displays she created in Seattle, Olympia, and Portland.

The reason I chose this track, True Affection, is that I really like how simple and light the music is. This isn’t an electronic dance track, this is a catchy poppy tune with uses infectious electronic sounds that makes this a really unique sound that you won’t hear on top 40 radio, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have a place in your music collection.

Give it a listen and let me know if you’ve heard it before and if you like it.

Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran is 22 year old singer-song writer with a Pop, folk, acoustic style. He began singing in a local church at 4 and started learning the guitar a few years later. Born and raised in Framlingham, Suffolk, in 2008 he decided to move to London to pursue his musical career. After 3 years, he started his career at a public party and caught the ear of both Elton John and Jamie Foxx. They were so impressed by his song writing they got him signed to Asylum Records. 2012 Sheeran began making his mark in the United States writing songs for the boy band One Direction and made an appearance on Taylor Swift’s album Red. He is currently touring with her as her opening act. I will be looking for him to be on the radio in the near future.

The Scene Aesthetic – Beauty in the Breakdown (2006)

It’s Monday so that means it’s time to highlight a track you might have missed from the past. This week I’m taking it back to 2006 when Myspace was the cool social networking site and Facebook was still in its early days. Myspace has fallen off the radar but one of the things that Myspace did really well was provide an easy way for new artists to promote themselves and have their music discovered. This word about The Scene Aesthetic grew really fast on Myspace and they became one of the most popular bands on the site without finding radio or commercial success beyond that.

The band is made up of two guys that sing and play acoustic instruments and the sound can be described as acoustic indie pop. The unique thing about their sound is that both vocalists are very talented, but have very different voices. So if this was a solo act I don’t think it would work, but when the two each take a verse or harmonize together it creates a really great sound that just works.

I know the song is seven years old but I do think it’s still worth a listen if you haven’t heard it. Check out the song below and let me know in the comments section if you like it.

Grimes – Unique Music for the Ear!

Grimes is a Canadian music artist, video director and musician born on March 17th, 1988. She went to college in Montreal and was heavily involved in the industrial music scene and loved underground electronic music. In 2010 she released her debut album Geidi Primes and in 2012 after releasing her third album The New York Times said “one of the most impressive albums of the year so far”. I agree with the Times 100%. Not sure what type of music to call it, Grimes’ music is not easily defined. An eclectic mix of styles which she herself describes as “ADD music”.

MUSIC YOU MIGHT OF MISSED- FUN and Panic! at the Disco- C’mon (2011)

I know you’re saying, “Fun and Panic! at the Disco, those aren’t new artists?” However this is an article for our weekly
“Music You Might of Missed” or M.Y.M.O.M. Mondays. I want to give some recognition to this song because some people may have never heard it and I think it’s a pretty great track.

Fun and Panic! at the Disco are on the same label, Fueled by Ramen, so it makes sense that they would team up on a track together. Now that I think about it, Fueled by Ramen, often has a lot of collaboration between label mates. Some notable tracks are Gym Class Heroes and Fall Out Boy lead singer, Patrick Stump, on Cupid’s Chokehold as well as Snakes on a Plane, which had Cobra Starship and Travis from Gym Class and William Beckett from The Academy Is.

Anyway the track, C’mon, is a great track because it features the 2 amazing lead singers from each band. They both have very distinctive voices and they both are such talented singers. I often feel that if a singer isn’t a solo act that there ability to actually sing is neglected and both Brandon Urie and Nate Reuss deserve acknowledgement for their pipes.

The song came out almost 2 years before Fun one the Grammy for Best New Artist so this track might have slipped by some people who became a fan of Fun more recently.

Check out the track below and let us know in the comments if you think the collaboration takes 2 good things and makes them one great thing or if these bands should stick to their own sound.

Nico Vega

nico-vega

BioShock fans will recognize their featured song right away but not a lot of people know and recognize these guys have been making great music since 2005.  Currently consistently of four members Nico Vega creates that old school music feel with their combination of roaring vocals from  Aja Volkman and the shredding guitars and monsterous drums from the trio of rich Koehler (Guitar), Dan Epand (Drums) and Jamila Weaver (Bass).

Let Nico Vega rock your world, they are bringing the old school vibe back to our generation!

Hadouken!

Hadouken! is so much more than a sound effect that gamers remember from playing Street Fighter II on their Super Nintendos. It’s also the name of a great electronic rock band from London.

It used to be that I would hear a song on a commercial and then look up the band to download the track and now with the popularity of viral videos it can have the same effect on an even larger scale. We have seen this recently with the “Harlem Shake” video trend going strong and lifting the song to #1 for the last 4 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. With Hodouken! they figured out years ago that if they attach their songs to a potential viral video that they can reach a huge audience that might not have otherwise heard their music and that’s exactly what they’ve done.

They put out their song, Mecha Love, 3 years ago with the viral video “People are Awesome” which has racked up a total of 60 million views and then 3 months ago they put out the follow-up video which is titled “People are Awesome 2013” with their song, Levitate. The latest video has already been watched 51 million times. This latest video with Levitate looks like it will pass up their first video in views very soon.

As for the band and the music, they have a really cool sound. The music is a perfect companion for these videos which, if you couldn’t guess from the title, shows people doing awesome things. Their talent and the success of the viral videos has helped them build a fanbase over the last few years that is allowing them to play bigger concerts and they are now starting to achieve commercial success.

Check out the videos below, if you haven’t already seen them, and leave a comment on what you think. Is the music good enough to stand on it’s own or are the crazy stunts the only appeal of these viral videos?

Purity Ring

Purity Ring are a Canadian electronic music duo from Edmonton, formed in 2010. Megan James and Corin Roddick are 21 and 24. Megan is a pianist and Corin played the drums before they form the band. During the live shows Megan does the singing and Corin plays custom-built, tree-shaped instrument to drive both live sound and lighting. It’s prettying interesting live, making it fun to see a live concert. Purity Ring is definitely great band if you are looking for something original.

Purity Ring Lofticries – Lyrics

Green, green thunder and the
Loud, loud rain
Lead our woes asunder
‘Neath the proud, proud veins

Of trains let bleed the gunmen of our
Pumping earthly hearts
Wean or joys and plunder
Peel our shining teeth
Bid our hold on happiness

Beat weighty tests with lofty cries
Lofty cries with trembling thighs
Weepy chests with weepy sighs
Weepy skin with trembling thighs

You must be hovering over yourself
Watching us drip on each other’s sides
Dear brother, collect all the liquids off of the floor
Use your oily fingers
Make a paste, let it form

Let it seep through your sockets and ears
Into your precious, ruptured skull
Let it seep, let it keep you from us
Patiently heal you
Patiently unreel you

Beat weighty tests with lofty cries
Lofty cries with trembling thighs
Weepy chests with weepy sighs
Weepy skin with trembling thighs

You must be hovering over yourself
Watching us drip on each other’s sides
Dear brother, collect all the liquids off of the floor
Use your oily fingers
Pick up paste, let it form

(Lofticries)

Beat weighty tests with lofty cries
Lofty cries with trembling thighs
Weepy chests with weepy sighs
Weepy skin with trembling thighs

(Lofticries)

You must be hovering over yourself
Watching us drip on each other’s sides

HUNTER HUNTED – Alternative Band to Watch in 2013

I got clued in to Hunter Hunted recently and I really like their sound. My opinion is that they sound like a mix between The Killers and “Pumped Up Kicks” singers, Foster the People.

I’ve only heard the tracks Keep Together and End of the World. Out of the two tracks I’ve heard I like End of the World the best. They also put a music video together for this track and I think the video is also very cool.

The band consists of only two guys from LA. I expect to hear more from these guys in the next couple months so keep your eyes and ears out for them.

Check out the video below for Hunter Hunter- End of the World and leave a comment on how you feel about the band and the song.
