Ron Pope – A Drop in the Ocean (2008)

Music You Might of Missed Monday is featuring Ron Pope and his track that became a hit on the internet, but never quite made it on the radio, A Drop in the Ocean. It’s an acoustic pop song that showcases his awesome voice in a mellow song that would be a perfect addition to your wedding playlist.

Ron Pope got a deal with Universal records after the internet success of Drop in the Ocean and they released the track as a single and although it didn’t blow up it was featured on shows like 90210 and So You Think You Can Dance. Since then Ron has split from Universal and is continuing to release music independently.

If you haven’t heard the track before or haven’t heard it in a while give it a listen below. The lyrics are posted as well.

RON POPE LYRICS – A Drop in the Ocean
A drop in the ocean
A change in the weather
I was praying that you and me might end up together
It’s like wishing for rain as I stand in the desert
But I’m holding you closer than most ’cause you are my heaven

I don’t wanna waste the weekend
If you don’t love me pretend
A few more hours then it’s time to go

As my train rolls down the east coast I wonder how you keep warm
It’s too late to cry
Too broken to move on

And still I can’t let you be
Most nights I hardly sleep
Don’t take what you don’t need from me

It’s just a drop in the ocean
A change in the weather
I was praying that you and me might end up together
Its like wishing for rain as I stand in the desert
But I’m holding you closer than most ’cause you are my heaven

Misplaced trust and old friends
Never counting regrets
By the grace of God I do not rest at all

New England as the leaves change
The last excuse that I’ll claim
I was a boy who loved a women like a little girl

And still I cant let you be
Most nights I hardly sleep
Don’t take what you don’t need from me

It’s just a drop in the ocean
A change in the weather
I was praying that you and me might end up together
It’s like wishing for rain as I stand in the desert
But I’m holding you closer than most ’cause you are my

Heaven doesn’t seem far away anymore
No
No
Heaven doesn’t seem far away

Heaven doesn’t seem far away anymore
No
No
Heaven doesn’t seem far away
Oh
Oh

A drop in the ocean
A change in the weather
I was praying that you and me might end up together
It’s like wishing for rain as I stand in the desert
But I’m holding you closer than most ’cause you are my heaven

Never Shout Never – Trouble (2009)

Music You Might of Missed Monday. This is one of my top 5 songs of all time. Never Shout Never was started as a solo project by singer/songwriter Cristofer Drew Ingle and now he tours with a band and the whole group is known as Never Shout Never. He started recording music at age 16 and started to develop a following on Myspace in 2008. That success has led to him being featured on MTV and a cult following with national touring. His success hasn’t translated into any big commercial hits yet but his music is definitely worth checking out. My favorite song comes from 2009 from a 3 track EP he put out titled, Me and My Uke.

Me and my Uke features Cristofer alone with his ukulele performing tracks that are simple, light, and catchy. Trouble is my favorite of the 3 tracks. The ukulele saw a rise in popularity between 2008-2010 from artists like Jason Mraz, Train, and the Plain White T’s. We don’t hear much of it in new music so hopefully it wasn’t just a musical fad like saying YOLO.

Give Trouble a listen and let us know if you’re a fan already or hearing it for the first time.

The Blow- True Affection (2009)

It’s Monday so that means it’s a new song that you might of missed. This week’s track comes from performance artist, Khalea Maricich, who performs under the name, The Blow. She’s an artist out of Portland that is not just tied to music she also performs monologues at shows and has showcased drawings and light displays she created in Seattle, Olympia, and Portland.

The reason I chose this track, True Affection, is that I really like how simple and light the music is. This isn’t an electronic dance track, this is a catchy poppy tune with uses infectious electronic sounds that makes this a really unique sound that you won’t hear on top 40 radio, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have a place in your music collection.

Give it a listen and let me know if you’ve heard it before and if you like it.

The Scene Aesthetic – Beauty in the Breakdown (2006)

It’s Monday so that means it’s time to highlight a track you might have missed from the past. This week I’m taking it back to 2006 when Myspace was the cool social networking site and Facebook was still in its early days. Myspace has fallen off the radar but one of the things that Myspace did really well was provide an easy way for new artists to promote themselves and have their music discovered. This word about The Scene Aesthetic grew really fast on Myspace and they became one of the most popular bands on the site without finding radio or commercial success beyond that.

The band is made up of two guys that sing and play acoustic instruments and the sound can be described as acoustic indie pop. The unique thing about their sound is that both vocalists are very talented, but have very different voices. So if this was a solo act I don’t think it would work, but when the two each take a verse or harmonize together it creates a really great sound that just works.

I know the song is seven years old but I do think it’s still worth a listen if you haven’t heard it. Check out the song below and let me know in the comments section if you like it.

MUSIC YOU MIGHT OF MISSED- FUN and Panic! at the Disco- C’mon (2011)

I know you’re saying, “Fun and Panic! at the Disco, those aren’t new artists?” However this is an article for our weekly
“Music You Might of Missed” or M.Y.M.O.M. Mondays. I want to give some recognition to this song because some people may have never heard it and I think it’s a pretty great track.

Fun and Panic! at the Disco are on the same label, Fueled by Ramen, so it makes sense that they would team up on a track together. Now that I think about it, Fueled by Ramen, often has a lot of collaboration between label mates. Some notable tracks are Gym Class Heroes and Fall Out Boy lead singer, Patrick Stump, on Cupid’s Chokehold as well as Snakes on a Plane, which had Cobra Starship and Travis from Gym Class and William Beckett from The Academy Is.

Anyway the track, C’mon, is a great track because it features the 2 amazing lead singers from each band. They both have very distinctive voices and they both are such talented singers. I often feel that if a singer isn’t a solo act that there ability to actually sing is neglected and both Brandon Urie and Nate Reuss deserve acknowledgement for their pipes.

The song came out almost 2 years before Fun one the Grammy for Best New Artist so this track might have slipped by some people who became a fan of Fun more recently.

Check out the track below and let us know in the comments if you think the collaboration takes 2 good things and makes them one great thing or if these bands should stick to their own sound.

Ratatat- Wildcat (2006)

Music You Might of Missed- Do you know Ratatat? They are an experimental electronic rock duo from New York that have been making music since 2001. I wanted to pay a special homage to their track, Wildcat.

This song has a special significance for me. With most of the songs that I write about for Music You Might of Missed, they relate to specific times in my life and when I hear them it brings up those memories. With Wildcat it takes me back to almost any long car ride with friends from 2007-2009.

My friends and I would often get bored on long drives so to pass the time we would try our best to do some freestyle rapping. I had put “Wildcat” on a mixed CD and then discovered that the song had a perfect beat for attempting to lay down some rhymes.

The goal was usually to make the other people in the car laugh so when I hear it now it reminds me of those good times. If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at freestyle rapping, with friends or in the privately in your bedroom or car, you should put this track on and give it a go.

The great thing about the song is that there are no lyrics, only the occasional bad-ass cougar growl, and the tempo is a nice, steady speed for spitting a flow.

As a bonus I have to give one more track shout out to Ratatat. Like I mentioned most of their music contains no lyrics, but they did do this great remix of the Notorious B.I.G. track “Party and Bullshit”. The Biggy track is part of hip hop history and Ratatat just adds a cool and catchy electronic vibe to an already great song.

Check out both of the tracks below so you can get your rap on and then you can get your party on.

Similou- All This Love (2004)

So this week for, Music you Might of Missed, I want to talk about a fun European dance song called All This Love by the electronic duo, Similou. I thought I knew this song before I started writing this article, but I was wrong. ]

I first heard this song on the local dance music radio station in Seattle and after I heard it I did what I usually did when I found a cool song in 2004, I went on Napster to download it. I figured the name of the song was Rainbow Styling because they say it repeatedly in the chorus. I found Rainbow Styling through the Napster title search and it said the artist was Royksopp, a Norwegian electronic dance duo.

I put the track on a CD and blasted it in my car and some of my friends who were riding with me really liked the fun beat and catchy chorus of the track. So later that summer in 2004 I was DJing a house party and decided to throw it on. Most of my friends weren’t into electronic music so I was a little nervous about doing this. This was the summer of 2004, the summer that gave us Usher’s, “YEAH”. YEAH was such a huge hit that during that same time period Lil Jon reused the exact same beat for the song “Freak-a-Leak” and nobody seemed to notice or care, that’s how huge that song was. You could have two hits with the exact same beat. The only other time I can think of this happening is Tone Loc’s Wild Thing and Funky Cold Medina. Anyway, the point is, you can only play “Yeah” so many times at a party so I decided to put on the track with the chorus about Rainbow Styling.

My drunk friends were hypnotized by the track and started dancing. They loved it and the weird thing about my friends is that the dudes love to dance with each other. I know that might sound a few alarms about the sexual preference of some of my friends, but I assure you it was all about having fun and making each other laugh. It’s hard not to laugh at a living room full of drunk dudes dancing to a song about rainbows. My friends even put together a signature move to the song where they would put their arms straight up into the air and then jump side to side. (I need to post a video of this.)

Anyway, the song brings up some great memories of house parties and laughing with friends so I wanted to write about it for “Music you Might of Missed”. With every track I like to give a little background and at the very least tell what year the music came out. For this track I googled Royksopp, Rainbow Styling and a bunch of results came up, even some Youtube videos of the track with Royksopp as the artist. After searching for the album and release date of the track I discovered the song wasn’t by Royksopp and it’s not called Rainbow Styling. For years I’ve had it all wrong and the actual artist is Similou and the song is really called All This Love. Apparently I’m not the only one to make this mistake and it’s just something that has continued to confuse people. The moral is don’t believe everything you read on the internet, but I’m glad I can now give the track proper credit and a proper shout out to the proper electronic duo, Similou, who come from Sweden and not Royksopp, who are another great electronic duo from Norway.

Here is the track and I encourage you to listen. If you are alone or with friends and are very brave, turn it up and try the dance move created for this track. Put your hands in the air and jump side to side to the music. Let me know if you like it and if you’ve ever had a time where you thought a song was by a different artist until you found out later.

Olly Murs- Dance with Me Tonight (2011)

You might recognize the name Olly Murs. Maybe you’ve been enjoying this British singers work over the last couple years or maybe you’ve just recently heard him on the radio singing his track Troublemaker featuring Flo Rider. I’m not a huge fan of the song Troublemaker because Olly and the music sound WAY TOO MUCH like Maroon 5. particularly the Maroon 5 song, This Love. I’ll post a link to both tracks below so you can compare and then you can tell me I’m not crazy for hearing a striking  resemblance between the two tracks.

Anyway, that’s not a huge deal breaker. Many songs sound the same and often people don’t notice. The track I want to talk about for music-you-might-of-missed Monday this week is Dance with Me Tonight by Olly Murs. The song was the 2nd single off of his album, In Case You Didn’t Know, from 2011. The song is unique because it has this great Motown throw back sound that really is hard not to like. Olly made this track after being frustrated with the way guys and girls might meet at a club and then communicate via text or facebook. Olly wanted to do a track that recalled the times when a guy would ask a girl on an actual date and they could have a nice night, even possibly going out dancing.

To give some more backround on Olly Murs, he rose to fame after being the runner up on the X-Factor in 2009. That was the British X-Factor, not the American X-Factor with the many faces of Britney Spears. I think Olly Murs is pretty good, but this specific song is really the special track for me that can be put on at any time and can bring up all those great memories of Motown music with a modern twist. I also am a big fan of Chiddy Bang so I really like there collaboration on the track, Heart Skips a Beat.

The video for Dance with Me Tonight is below. Leave a comment if you’ve heard this track or are hearing it for the first time. Also as promised the new Olly Murs track and below that the Maroon 5 song for you to compare and tell me I’m not completely crazy for thinking these tracks are way too similar.

Black Kids- I’m Not Going to Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance (Twelves Remix) (2008)

It’s a very rare thing for a remix to surpass the original, but in my opinion the Twelves remix of “I’m Not Going to Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance” is the superior version of the song. The original version by the group Black Kids is more of an indie pop-rock track and the Twelves turn it into the kind of song you want to put on at a party and just jump around to.

The song is hopefully something you have heard in both the original and the remix. This one is hard for me to know how popular the track really is. I didn’t think it was much of a commercial success but one thing that makes me think otherwise is that I did see this remixed version of the track performed on the TV show Glee. Not that I have ever watched the show Glee, so I couldn’t tell you if the track was performed by Blaine at the dinosaur themed prom, but I heard it was on the show and that is usually a decent indicator of commercial success.

One of the most confusing things about the song is the first lyric sung by the male lead singer. “You are the girl that I’ve been dreaming of… ever since I was a little girl.” To shed some light on the confusion, my understanding is that one of the female members of the group wrote the lyrics to the song and she also happens to be a lesbian. Hopefully that makes some sense out of these lyrics that I know threw me off guard after the first listen.

Let me know if you like the remix or the original and let me know if you think my theory about songs being featured on Glee should be any kind of gauge for commercial success in the comment section below.

Dispatch- The General (1998)

Hopefully you already know this band and song, but if you don’t, you gotta give it a listen. The song has a folk vibe and tells the story of a general that tells his soldiers to go home.

In the late 90s the band Dispatch, had no label, but gained popularity outside of the Boston area thanks to online peer-to-peer file sharing thanks to Napster and Limewire. The band developed a cult following and then in 2002 broke up only to reunite for a few show in the following years. As of recent they are back together and playing regular shows to big crowds mostly made up of young people who got hooked in the late 90s. I think the music holds up pretty well with the recent resurgence in a folk sound in popular music. Some of today’s bands that come to mind with a similar sound are Mumford and Sons and The Lumineers.

Give, The General, a listen and if you really like it one of my other favorites by them is a different sound, but still great. The other song I love by them is a cover of Paul Simon’s Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes.  Check them both out and tell me if you know and like this music or are hearing them for the first time.
